Daimler Truck makes artificial intelligence accessible to all employees worldwide: with LibreChat

With the advent of language models such as ChatGPT, the world – and especially the world of work – has changed at record speed. More and more tasks are being supported by artificial intelligence (AI), fundamentally transforming work processes and job profiles.

Since the rise of so-called "generative AI tools," i.e. AI applications that create new content such as text, images, audio, or video, companies have been faced with the challenge of integrating these new technologies into their processes in a meaningful and secure manner. This requires the creation of technical and legal frameworks. In Europe, strict regulatory requirements also apply: the European AI Regulation sets out clear rules on how AI must be used responsibly and transparently. Companies must therefore carefully consider how and where they will use AI solutions before introducing them and ensure that their AI solutions guarantee a high level of protection in terms of health, safety, and fundamental rights.  

Daimler Truck also faced this challenge. Over the past few years, the company has carried out various pilot projects in different areas of the company and investigated how AI can be used in a meaningful, supportive, and value-adding way. Daimler Truck and the General Works Council are working together to shape the introduction of AI with the aim of harmonizing innovation and co-determination and ensuring the responsible use of AI. To this end, a Group Works Agreement on the use and handling of artificial intelligence has been adopted. It also includes an agreement to accompany the introduction of AI with targeted training to actively prepare employees for the change. 

Now, the time has come at Daimler Truck: AI for everyone!

With the introduction of LibreChat, Daimler Truck is driving the digital transformation and is offering its employees worldwide entirely new opportunities. What is LibreChat?

LibreChat is a freely available AI platform that enables the use of state-of-the-art AI models and functions. Unlike commercial solutions, the open-source nature of the software allows control over the system and the data processed. Open-source means that the source code is openly accessible. By using open-source software, LibreChat can therefore be adapted to the individual requirements of Daimler Truck, creating maximum transparency and security when using AI systems. 

The platform will continue to be developed by users worldwide and by Daimler Truck. This has resulted, for example, in a SharePoint Connector that enables employees to integrate their files quickly and easily, which Daimler Truck has in turn made available to the global LibreChat community. With the use of LibreChat, Daimler Truck is sending another signal of its technological sovereignty and innovative strength in the digital age. 

How is the platform provided?

Daimler Truck chose the cloud infrastructure from Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS) to ensure secure and flexible use. This enables LibreChat to be used worldwide, to be customized at any time, and allowing Daimler Truck to respond flexibly to new requirements. IT security and data protection are always a top priority: All data and information entered remains within the company and is not passed on to the manufacturers of the AI models used.  

 

Why is Daimler Truck introducing LibreChat?

With this move, Daimler Truck is developing its positioning as a digital company and making AI accessible to everyone in the company, regardless of location or division. With LibreChat, the company is breaking new ground and strengthening its technological independence. The idea of using an open-source solution for the widespread use of AI came from a group of employees who saw a gap in current AI implementations worldwide. Some "off-the-shelf" AI applications are available to employees, but they do not match all requirements of Daimler Truck in terms of functionalities and cost.  

 

It was important to my team and me to provide employees with cost-effective and secure access to AI. Our aim is to enable as many people as possible to learn about the benefits and limitations of the technology. AI should be something you can experience. We don't see this program as an IT issue but are driving it forward on an interdisciplinary basis with representatives from the works council, strategy, legal, and data protection departments. Above all, we are supporting this learning process with change and training activities. After a pilot phase lasting just a few weeks, we are now rolling it out to the wider workforce. This shows how much heart and soul has gone into the project, and we are incredibly proud of how it is being implemented.

What specific options do employees have?

The applications are diverse and easy to use. With LibreChat, for example, employees can: 

  • ask questions via the chatbot and quickly receive the right answers, 
  • program their own AI agents that automatically take over tasks, and share and develop these with colleagues 
  • create helpful chatbots for the team, 
  • generate images for presentations or graphics, 
  • retrieve specific information from SharePoint and other systems via LibreChat. 
     

During the pilot phase, several thousand employees used the platform and developed over 800 of their own AI solutions and agents. This shows that possibilities are growing every day! 

What specific use cases for LibreChat already exist?

The agents developed to perform a variety of tasks and provide an initial impression of how AI can make Daimler Truck's work processes more efficient in the future.  

  • Manufacturing: A digital agent is available to production employees around the clock as a central point of contact. It provides support for all questions, helps reduce downtime, and actively contributes to continuous process optimization.  
  • Data-driven decisions: This agent bundles data from a wide variety of sources – such as suppliers, contracts, budgets, or strategic objectives – and processes it holistically. When managers ask the agent a question, they are provided not only with well-founded insights, but also with relevant discussion points for optimizing operational processes and focusing on strategic initiatives. An integrated data foundation enables data-driven decisions to be made, efficiency to be increased, and sustainable growth to be promoted.

People always take center stage

At the beginning of 2025, the company launched an AI learning initiative that is being offered in several languages and at all Daimler Truck locations worldwide. Here, employees and managers have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with artificial intelligence and deepen their knowledge through dynamic and interactive learning formats. The focus is on sparking curiosity and communicating AI in an understandable way, with an eye to its potential and responsible application. 

But despite all the wonderful new and fast possibilities, people remain at the heart of Daimler Truck. Teamwork and cooperation are irreplaceable, direct feedback from customers is indispensable, and human thinking and creativity are invaluable.   

One thing is certain for Daimler Truck: artificial intelligence cannot replace personal interaction between colleagues. AI will make many work processes more efficient and take over monotonous, repetitive tasks – but people will remain indispensable in the company. The often professional-looking results of AI require careful review and a deep understanding. This is how the world of work is changing – not just at Daimler Truck. Those who embrace these changes will be able to make better decisions: supported by AI, but with humans still at the wheel.
