Leinfelden-Echterdingen/Berlin – At the international railway technology trade fair InnoTrans in Berlin, Daimler Truck, together with G. Zwiehoff GmbH and ZAGRO Bahn- und Baumaschinen GmbH, is showcasing four Unimog vehicles for rail operations. In addition, the manufacturer, together with Henne Nutzfahrzeuge GmbH, the general Unimog distributor, and Zwiehoff, presented a new Unimog to Stadtwerke München (SWM) and Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG) on site. The vehicle is part of a fleet of four new Unimog units that will be used in the future for the maintenance of Munich's tram network.

Sinaida Cordes, Authorized Signatory SWM/MVG: “With these Unimog, we are gaining four modern vehicles in the near term that can be deployed year-round across a wide range of applications to maintain and clean our rail infrastructure. This marks an important first step in our strategy to make Munich's tram network more resilient.”

The delivered Unimog U 423 is equipped with a Zwiehoff road-rail system, enabling flexible operation both on roads and rails. Thanks to its modular design, the vehicle can perform a wide range of tram network maintenance tasks throughout the year. During winter operations, it can be equipped with the Aebi Schmidt VPL24 snow plow and the Bucher Municipal Yeti W25 spreader. In summer, the vehicle can be fitted with a flatbed body and an Autech rail-grinding trailer featuring a lifting device and hydraulic power generator.

In addition, the vehicle can be equipped with a variety of implements for vegetation management, cleaning, and maintenance work. Optional attachments include equipment for vegetation control, infrastructure cleaning, vacuum operations, and a water tank for fire prevention during rail-grinding operations.

ZAGRO Showcases Rail Shunting and Maintenance Vehicles

Together with Unimog Expert Partner ZAGRO Bahn- und Baumaschinen GmbH, Daimler Truck is also presenting additional Unimog rail solutions at InnoTrans. On the ZAGRO stand, visitors can see a Unimog U 423 rail-road shunting vehicle capable of moving trailing loads of up to 1,000 metric tons. Its high tractive effort is achieved through the torque converter clutch, permanent all-wheel drive, and the excellent traction provided by the vehicle’s own tires when operating on rails.

ZAGRO is also exhibiting a customer vehicle based on the Unimog U 423, equipped with a Palfinger rail-road crane and a MULAG mower attachment. Designed for maintenance work along railway lines, the vehicle can operate flexibly both on roads and rails thanks to its road-rail technology. Cameras assist the operator during the rail-on process, making the transition from road to rail easier even in confined spaces.

Zwiehoff Presents High-Performance Unimog Shunting Vehicle

A further Unimog U 423 configured as a rail-road shunting vehicle is on display at the Zwiehoff stand. Equipped with the Zwiehoff rail guidance system and a Knorr wagon braking system, the vehicle is capable of moving trailing loads of up to 1,000 metric tons.

Its ability to transition quickly between road and rail, combined with its versatile mounting and body options as well as mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic interfaces, makes the Unimog a flexible solution for shunting operations and for railway infrastructure maintenance and service work.
