For Daimler Coaches, safety is more than a duty, it is an attitude. That is why the coaches from Setra not only meet the requirements of the General Safety Regulation, which have been mandatory since June 2024. With the even more powerful assistance system Active Brake Assist 6, which is fitted as standard in all Setra coaches, Daimler Coaches is further expanding its leading role in assistance systems. With the 360° camera system and the new MirrorCam, Daimler Coaches is making further contributions to even greater safety.
Active Brake Assist 6 emergency brake assistant
The Active Brake Assist 6 (ABA 6) emergency brake assistant works with a combination of short- and long-range radar sensors and a camera. The warning cascade in the event of an impending accident consists of a visual and haptic warning. If the driver fails to react, the system first applies partial braking and then emergency braking. Thanks to new sensors, ABA 6 is even more powerful than its predecessor system. ABA 6 detects moving or stationary people and cyclists in front of the vehicle and can perform emergency braking independently. The system response to these weaker road users increases from 50 to 60 km/h. With ABA 6, accidents can be avoided even more reliably. The system covers the entire speed range of the vehicle and is active in the background.
Sideguard Assist 2 for both sides of the vehicle
One of the most unpleasant tasks of a coach driver is turning maneuvers in city traffic: he has to keep an eye on traffic lights, signs, oncoming and cross traffic and pedestrians and cyclists to the side at the same time. In addition, the traffic situation can change in a matter of seconds. Cyclists and pedestrians are also not always aware that a coach driver may not even be able to see them. This is why Daimler Coaches has been gradually introducing the world's first Sideguard Assist turning assistant as an option in all Setra model series since 2018. The system provides information about and warns of pedestrians, cyclists and stationary obstacles when turning right on the door side.
Thanks to a new sensor concept, the radar-based Sideguard Assist 2 cornering assistant reacts and warns even more precisely in the event of a risk of collision with pedestrians and cyclists. It is now also used for the driver's side. This also makes turning left even safer. In addition, Sideguard Assist 2 takes over the function of a lane change assistant at speeds above 40 km/h. Up to the maximum permitted speed, it informs the driver of the lane change. Up to the maximum permitted speed, it informs the driver of an object on the driver's and passenger's side. In critical situations when changing lanes, the system generates a visual and haptic warning. Sideguard Assist 2 thus supports lane changes, for example when overtaking a cyclist or when changing lanes/overtaking on multi-lane roads.
Frontguard Assist avoids blind spots
Frontguard Assist is also radar-based. It detects and warns of obstacles or people directly in front of the vehicle up to a speed of 15 km/h. Sideguard Assist 2 and Frontguard Assist together form a complete warning system that warns of obstacles and people to the side and in front of the coach. Together with the standard reversing camera or even more so the optional 360° camera system, the driver is provided with a comprehensive warning system around the coach.
Traffic Sign Assist
The intelligent speed assistant Traffic Sign Assist compares the current speed of the coach with the permitted vehicle speed and issues a warning if the permitted speed is exceeded. It works despite different signage throughout Europe. Traffic Sign Assist can therefore reduce the risk of accidents caused by excessive speed and inattention. It also reduces the risk of fines for speeding.
Attention Assist, TPM and reversing camera as standard
The TPM (Tire Pressure Monitoring) system prevents tire damage by indicating any loss of pressure. Correct tire pressure also reduces both wear and fuel consumption. The Attention Assist (AtAs) system and an interface for the use of breathalyzers for the driver's workplace are also included as standard. The same applies to the reversing camera. As an alternative to the reversing camera, companies can also choose the 360° camera system.
MirrorCam instead of exterior mirrors
All Setra coach and coach series are optionally available with cameras instead of the previous exterior mirrors. This eye-catching innovation not only changes the appearance of the coaches towards a body without visible add-on parts - it also has an impact on function, safety and economy. The advantages are obvious: extended field of vision for the driver through the windows, considerably better visibility to the rear in the dark thanks to residual light amplification. The small surface of the camera lens is less susceptible to soiling and is better protected against the weather thanks to its installation in the camera wing. Compared to conventional mirrors, the MirrorCam barely or only slightly protrudes beyond the edges of the vehicle. This means easier maneuvering and less damage. Finally, the frontal area of the coach is reduced and there is less turbulence. This has a positive effect on fuel consumption.
And this is how the MirrorCam works: The images from the cameras are transmitted to 15-inch monitors mounted on the inside of the A-pillars. Superimposed lines signal the end of the vehicle and help the driver to estimate the speed of approaching vehicles as well as when turning in at the end of an overtaking maneuver. They are activated by engaging reverse gear or activating the blinker. An additional camera and a second seven-inch monitor provide a view of the front right-hand corner of the vehicle.
The camera is heated. Photodiodes in the monitors detect the incident light and adjust the brightness of the monitors individually. The driver can also make a basic setting. The warning displays of the Sideguard Assist cornering assistant can be shown in the monitors on request.
