  • Tradition that goes back 20 years: the Safety Coach from Daimler Buses
  • Focus on accident prevention: from Active Brake Assist 6 to the
    360° camera system
  • In the worst case, passive safety also plays an important role

Leinfelden-Echterdingen – Mercedes‑Benz is synonymous with safety. This applies not only to passenger cars and trucks, but also and especially to buses and coaches bearing the Mercedes star. Almost all the safety and assistance systems prescribed for buses and coaches today were used for the first time in a Mercedes‑Benz bus. The new and advanced assistance and safety systems for buses and coaches from Daimler Buses, such as Active Brake Assist 6 (ABA 6), Sideguard Assist 2, Frontguard Assist and Traffic Sign Assist, introduced as part of the EU General Safety Regulation (GSR-B) 2024, are further proof of how consistently Daimler Buses implements “Vision Zero”, the path to accident-free driving. The new safety systems set new standards and in some cases go beyond the scope of functions required by law. The goal: the best possible accident prevention to protect drivers and all road users.

Tradition that goes back 20 years: the Safety Coach from Mercedes‑Benz

Presenting the current state of the art in safety technology to the public in a coach equipped with the latest safety technology has a long tradition at Daimler Buses. As early as 2004, a pioneering vehicle equipped with Adaptive Cruise Control (ART), Lane Assist (SPA) and Continuous Braking Limiter (DBL) demonstrated what was technically possible at that time. Only two years later, when the first Safety Coach based on the Mercedes‑Benz Travego rolled across Europe’s roads, these innovative assistance systems were already available as standard on Mercedes‑Benz buses.

Focus on accident prevention: from Active Brake Assist 6 to the 360° camera system

It therefore goes without saying that the sixth edition of the Safety Coach – based on the Mercedes‑Benz Tourismo – is now equipped with all the safety systems available for touring coaches today, many of which have been systematically developed and improved. The new Active Brake Assist 6 emergency braking assistance system now offers even better performance. Sideguard Assist 2 reacts and provides even more accurate warnings if there is a risk of collision with stationary or moving pedestrians and cyclists – now on the driver’s side too. At low speeds, the completely new Frontguard Assist detects obstacles or persons directly in front of the vehicle. The systems also include Traffic Sign Assist, Lane Assist (SPA), Attention Assist (AtAs), Tyre Pressure Monitoring (TPM), Adaptive Cruise Control (ART) with additional stop-and-go function, Brake Assist (BA), Continuous Braking Limiter (DBL), Electronic Stability Program (ESP), rain/light sensor and the 360° camera system.

Should anything happen: passive safety also plays an important role

Should something unexpected ever happen, the Tourismo Safety Coach is extremely well equipped – thanks to a smoke alarm in the luggage compartment with display in the driver’s workplace, the fire extinguishing system in the engine compartment and the installation space of the auxiliary heater, the patented Front Collision Guard (FCG) safety system, along with its equally lightweight and highly stable annular frame system with body strength in accordance with UN ECE R66.02.

With this comprehensive safety equipment, the current Mercedes‑Benz Tourismo Safety Coach defines the state of the art in safety technology for buses and coaches and continues the long tradition of Safety Coaches.
