Leinfelden-Echterdingen/Speyer - The Brazzeltag at the Technik Museum Speyer has long since become a fixed date for fans of technical cultural assets. On the grounds in the cathedral city, steam meets diesel, jet power meets the romance of wrenches - and right in the middle of it all: the impressive fleet of historic and current commercial vehicles from Mercedes-Benz Trucks. This year, the truck manufacturer brought along a wide selection ranging from pioneer models to the electric flagship eActros 600, supplemented by special show trucks and vehicles from private collectors.
The special exhibition “Legends on Wheels” in the museum's space hall has been attracting many visitors since December 2024. For Brazzeltag, Mercedes-Benz Trucks Classic once again opened the doors to the collection and sent a selection of historic vehicles ready for operation onto the track - loud and close enough to touch.
History in motion
In the specially erected show arena, veterans from six decades demonstrated what Mercedes-Benz trucks stand for: technical solidity, durability - and plenty of character. One of the first trucks produced in Wörth was on display, as were typical representatives of the 1960s, 70s and 80s. Many of these vehicles are particularly remarkable due to their authentic state of preservation. The factory fleet was supplemented by two more classics from private owners: Rolf Hamprecht, a proven expert on the vintage truck scene, and his son Tobias brought
From electricity to storms: diversity at Daimler Truck
The eActros 600, a low-noise brazzeltaxi, offered a contrasting program as it drove with numerous guests between the parking lot, public transport interfaces and museum grounds. The combination of modern design, long range and impressive comfort generated positive reactions across the board. The vehicle proved in an appealing way that sustainable mobility has long been suitable for everyday use - and has just as much of a place at Brazzeltag as a Hauber from 1965.
Daimler Truck brought a completely different caliber to the starting line with its own RaceTruck. With a whopping 1,500 hp, roaring sound and precise driving style, racing pro Steffen Faas demonstrated how heavyweight and sportiness can be combined. The yellow bullet was sure to attract enthusiastic glances on every lap. Another real eye-catcher: a design study based on the legendary Unimog. With its rumbling engine, the concept vehicle showed that robust technology and avant-garde design need not be mutually exclusive.
Another special eye-catcher was the Unimog U 400, which not only impressed with its striking silhouette and versatility, but also had an eventful history: In 2006, the vehicle was used as a service vehicle for racing driver Ellen Lohr's team at the legendary Dakar Rally.
Another Unimog with a Hollywood past caused quite a stir: the Unimog “Hound”, known from the blockbuster “Transformers”. In the role of the rough but kind-hearted Autobot, Hound is transformed into this very Unimog in the film - an ideal casting for the fight against the “Decepticons”. At Brazzeltag, the powerful movie vehicle was in no way inferior to the other exhibits and attracted a lot of curious glances with its martial look and cinematic appeal.
"Our mission is not only to preserve the history of technology, but to keep it alive - in all its facets. Brazzeltag is the perfect stage for this. The fact that our vehicles inspire young and old alike is a wonderful confirmation of our work," says Bernd Hufendiek, responsible for Mercedes-Benz Trucks Classic at Daimler Truck.
Dirk Stranz, test engineer at Daimler Truck, added in his on-site presentation: "This is where history and the future collide in the most exciting way. The eActros 600 drives quietly and confidently side by side with a classic car from the 60s - that is not only impressive, but also makes the change in mobility tangible for everyone."
Hands-on technology
Away from the arena, the vehicles and their drivers gathered in the so-called paddock. There was a lively exchange with the public. Whether it was conversations between classic car enthusiasts, enthusiastic questions from young visitors or a snapshot at the wheel - people talked shop, marveled and laughed. One of the most emotional moments: five-year-old Felix, who was allowed to sit in the driver's seat of a heavy-duty transport truck (SLT) for the first time and let the mighty fanfares sound.
The special exhibition “Legends on Wheels” in the Space Hall can be seen until March 2026. Particularly impressive: the glass workshop in which the two volunteer mechanics Klaus Junge and Friedrich Först are currently working on one of the oldest original Daimler trucks in existence. The aim is to make it roadworthy again by the end of the exhibition - in the hope that it will make its journey home under its own power. Or perhaps take another turn straight to Brazzeltag 2026.
