This award motivates our entire team to continue driving the change in public transport forward in a pioneering and consistent manner.”
Leinfelden-Echterdingen/Düsseldorf – The Mercedes-Benz eCitaro family by Daimler Buses has been honored with the German Sustainability Award 2026 in the transformation field of climate in the category “Products”. The jury particularly acknowledged the proven contribution of the fully electric bus family to decarbonization and noise reduction in urban areas, as well as the holistic mobility concept that includes not only vehicles but also consulting and service solutions.
Till Oberwörder, CEO Daimler Buses: “The German Sustainability Award 2026 is a significant recognition of our work on the eCitaro family and our eMobility Consulting. Since 2018, the eCitaro has been in series production – and it proves every day in numerous European cities that locally CO₂-free urban transport is already a reality. We continuously develop it further and support our customers with comprehensive consulting on their path to transformation. This award motivates our entire team to continue driving the change in public transport forward in a pioneering and consistent manner.”
Holistic E-Mobility Ecosystem Impresses Jury
The expert jury evaluated not only technological innovation but above all measurable impact: resource conservation, reduced emissions, closed loops, sustainable production methods, and market leadership. The eCitaro family impressed with a concept that goes far beyond the individual vehicle and sets new standards for sustainable mobility in public transport.
The overall package includes battery-electric and fuel-cell-based drives, locally CO₂-free and quiet operation, as well as a modular battery concept with an energy capacity of 588 kWh for the solo bus and 686 kWh for the 18-meter articulated bus. High recycling rates and the recoverability of key raw materials further strengthen resource and climate protection.
Particularly highlighted was Daimler Buses’ comprehensive consulting and service offering, which makes it easier for transport operators to switch to alternative drives and thus strengthens public transport as a central pillar of the mobility transition.
Clear Strategy: Locally CO₂-Free Mobility for Today and Tomorrow
Daimler Buses has a clear e-roadmap for electrifying its vehicles across all segments. In line with Daimler Truck’s dual-technology strategy, Daimler Buses relies on both battery-electric and hydrogen-based technologies. Electric city buses have been in series production since 2018. Electric intercity buses will follow in 2026 with the Mercedes-Benz eIntouro. In addition, Daimler Buses plans to have battery-electric coaches in its portfolio by the end of the decade. Fuel-cell coaches will then enter series production in a subsequent step. Currently, test drives are underway with the “H2 Coach” technology carrier featuring a hydrogen-based fuel cell drive.
The Mercedes-Benz eCitaro Family: Modular, Safe, Proven in the Market
Since 2018, the eCitaro family has set benchmarks in electromobility for urban transport. Based on the proven Citaro platform, it combines state-of-the-art battery, charging, and drive technologies, the highest safety standards, and a functional, attractive design. Thanks to modular variants – from the compact eCitaro K to the powerful articulated bus eCitaro G – a wide range of operational profiles can be optimally covered.
At the UITP Summit 2025, the latest battery generation NMC4, which will be available from 2026, celebrated its premiere. It offers nearly 13 percent higher energy density, ranges of up to 600 km, long service life even with fast charging up to 300 kW, and full compatibility with the current NMC3 generation.
Infrastructure from a Single Source – Omniplus Charge
A key success factor is Daimler Buses Solutions GmbH, which has been offering a complete service portfolio under the Omniplus Charge brand since 2025 – including consulting, planning and construction of charging infrastructure, energy consulting and intelligent charging management, operation and service of charging systems, battery storage solutions, and digital services related to electromobility.
For hydrogen projects, expert teams analyze economic deployment scenarios. Through the partnership with H2 Mobility, H₂ filling stations can be flexibly implemented near depots or directly at the operating site – without investment or operational risk for transport operators.
A Strong Impulse for the Mobility Transition
The award underscores the central importance of public transport for environmentally friendly mobility in the future. With the eCitaro family and a holistic e-mobility ecosystem, Daimler Buses demonstrates how locally CO₂-free urban transport can already be successfully implemented today – and the role integrated vehicle, service, and infrastructure concepts play in driving the mobility transition.
