Wörth/Torgau - Jens Riedel and Silvio Schubert keep Torgau clean with their street sweepers. They drive through the streets of the small town in Saxony for eight hours a day. Recently, they have started using a new Unimog U 427 on the job that draws its power from an OM 936 (Euro VIe) BlueTec diesel engine. This engine generates 200 kW (272 hp) of performance from six cylinders and a displacement of 7.7 liters, generating a maximum torque of 1,100 Nm. This gives Stadtwerke Torgau a compact, powerful and versatile vehicle that complements the previous Unimog U 300 and U 400 implement carriers in its fleet. The decisive factor for the new acquisition was the over ten-year positive experience with the UNIversal-Motor-Gerät: “Daily operations run smoothly with the Unimog we already have in our fleet. The vehicles run like clockwork. It’s really fun,” Jens Riedel explains.

Dual-circuit power hydraulics, VarioPilot® and EasyDrive enable precise operations

In addition to the U 300 and U 400, the latest implement carrier also features a sweeper attachment from Aebi Schmidt. The 35 kW or up to 240 bar dual-circuit power hydraulics of the U 427 drive the street sweeper. It controls the attachments precisely without jerking movements. The implement carriers also feature optional VarioPilot® dual-mode steering. This enables drivers to move the steering wheel and pedals from left to right. This enables the driver to assume a suitable position for the specific task at hand. For example, while sweeping, they have an unobstructed view of the working machinery. The optional EasyDrive traction drive allows for fully hydrostatic driving from 0.1 to 50 km/h, enabling independent adjustment of the Unimog's working speed regardless of engine and PTO speed, tailored to the specific application.

All three Unimogs are fitted with a snowplow and gritter

The U 400 and the new U 427 are in operation for eight hours daily, cleaning the streets of Torgau. In snow and ice conditions, all three Unimog vehicles can also be deployed for winter service. They are equipped with a snowplow and a gritter provided by Unimog ExpertPartner Bucher Municipal. Comfortable special and safety equipment, such as seat heating, mirror and a windshield heater, surround lighting and revolving beacons contribute to safe and successful deployments even during the cold season.
